Oaksenham recording at firewall Rock Festival – October 10, 2003 at Yerevan Puppet Theatre Oaksenham is an Armenian symphonic prog band whose sole release, Woden’s Eve Live captures a concert perfomance in June of 2002. They are a six-piece band playing traditional guitar, bass, drums and keyboards augmented by a flautist and violinist. Their style reminds me quite a bit of early Camel, due to the way flute is used, but also in the overall feel. There’s some of the gentle, “verdent countryside” feel of Jethro Tull’s more pastoral offerings, and also a bit of classical counterpoint stylings á la Gentle Giant (in fact there’s a nicely-done GG tribute cut, “Talybont / Three Friends” on this album). In addition to this, there’s some fusiony guitar, bass and drum sections and folkish violin work. But of even more interest, Oaksenham now has a studio album of their work available. It’s titled Conquest of the Pacific after the “side long” epic that makes up the second half of the CD. As good as Woden’s Eve Live was, it only hinted at what this band might be able to do in a studio setting. Conquest of the Pacific contains studio versions of several of the Woden’s Eve Live pieces, plus much more newly composed for the album. Jeremiah – The Complete First Season A Warning for those who may be sensitive. – H. Robertson – If you are like me and never saw this program until it was on the Sci-Fi Channel you should be warned. The DVD series is the Showtime version and I have now learned that version has a lot of nudity and cussing. Now that doesn’t bother me, I love this show. But there are some people who may not want to have this around if you have small children. None of the other viewers mentioned this and I thought it could be important to some. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX HOME ENT: A stunning sci-fi epic that re-envisions the future of mankind, this top-rated, action-packed original series is “intriguing” (Associated Press), “fascinating” (Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel) and “deep and intense” (Science Fiction Weekly)! Luke Perry (”Beverly Hills 90210,” “Oz”) stars as Jeremiah, one of the many young survivors of the “Big Death” that claimed the lives of every adult in the world 15 years ago. Now forging his way through a bleak wilderness fraught with danger and conspiracy, Jeremiah and his most trusted friend, Kurdy (Malcolm-Jamal Warner), are plunged into thrilling adventures that test every facet of their humanity…and ultimately the fate of the human race itself! Jeremiah fans have been clamoring for the release of the show on DVD (it originally aired on Showtime), and with 19 episodes and a passel of special features spread out over six discs and totaling nearly 15 hours, they are unlikely to be disappointed.
Based on a series of graphic novels by Hermann Huppen, the show takes place on an Earth where, some 15 years earlier, a hormonal virus killed everyone who was past puberty. It’s an intriguing premise, but one that creator J. Michael Straczynski (best known for his work on “Babylon 5″) and his team haven’t exploited to its fullest. The slow-moving, 90-minute pilot episode explains little of the internal logic of this post-apocalyptic world; how, for instance, did these young folks, the oldest of whom were only 12 or 13 when “the Big Death” wiped out six billion people, manage to survive, educate themselves, and learn skills and trades without any adult influence in a society that’s in shambles? It would be fun to know more.
Still, the show’s ideas are provocative, and the work of co-stars and TV stalwarts Luke Perry as the title character, a hero with a conscience, and Malcolm-Jamal Warner as his more cynical sidekick, is good. Jeremiah, to its credit, doesn’t rely on special effects, production design, costumes, or sets to carry it. That means the burden is on the ongoing themes (Jeremiah’s guilt over his younger brother’s death and his search for the maybe-mythic “Valhalla Sector”; the threat of the plague returning in an even more virulent form; the attempts to rebuild civilization) and individual stories, which are frequently compelling and smart (especially “Things Left Unsaid,” the two-part season finale, a cliffhanger that offers many possibilities for future seasons), even while favoring talk over action.
The special features occupy disc 1, along with the pilot, and include deleted scenes, production sketches, and commentary on the pilot by Perry (who also executive produced) and Warner. If you’re looking for superior sci-fi escapism, however, try Farscape or Stargate SG-1, to name just two. –Sam Graham Jeremiah – The Complete First Season
When I first heard about firewalls I imagined a wall of fire surrounding my computer, protecting it from all the nastiness that permeates the web. It has since been brought to my attention that the obvious comparison is with a fire break, a sort of demilitarised zone that stops fires from spreading.
Firewalls act as a permeable space between your computer and the rest of the net. They deny undesirable items entry while allowing network friendly ones to pass unhindered. I think that I prefer my vision of evil transmissions going up in flames while the righteous enter unharmed.
Firewalls function according to rule sets that can be specified and customised according your business’s needs. Rule sets can be either inclusive or exclusive. Exclusive firewalls block only the traffic that has been specified in the rule set; all other traffic is allowed through. Inclusive firewalls on the other hand, only allow through the traffic that matches the rule sets and block all other transmissions. Inclusive firewalls offer more security than the exclusive kind.
Firewall controls traffic through the use of one of three methods:
o Packet filtering: filters analyse chunks of data to see if they match the rule sets. If the packets of data meet the set specifications they are forwarded to a requesting system. Packets that fail to make the grade are summarily discarded.
o Proxy service: In this method, the firewall retrieves information directly from the Internet before it’s forwarded to the requesting system.
o Stateful inspection: A relatively new method that singles out key aspects of data packets and compares them to information that is stored in a database. The method is based on an analysis of information sent from the business. If incoming information matches the type of content going out, it’s allowed in.
You can customise firewalls by adding or removing filters according to criteria that’s relevant to your business. Some examples of features that can be customised include:
o IP adresses: filters can block traffic transfers to and from certain IP addresses if they suspect them of foul play or malicious intentions.
o Domain names: Access to and from certain domain names can be blocked by the same process that blocks IP addresses.
o Protocols: According to howstuffworks.com, protocols are the pre-defined ways in which people or computer programmes talk to services that they want to use. Firewalls can be set for the following protocols:
Internet Protocol (IP)
Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP)
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
Transmission Control Protocol TCP)
It’s possible for businesses to set up protocols on only a few of their computers while blocking them on the rest. In this way it’s possible for the business to retain complete control of information entering and leaving their networks. They can also restrict their employees’ access to certain kinds of network sites and capabilities.
However you imagine them, be it as fiery walls consuming Internet evil, or as the more traditional protective permeable space between your computer and the rest of the net, there is no denying their extreme importance. With hackers and e-vandals using the net as their personal playgrounds, it’s more essential than ever to protect your assests, particularly valuable data. It’s no longer a quesiton of should you get a firewall, but which firewall is best for you?

Online fraud has been and still is a big problem, not just because there has been a rise in card fraud and online identity theft over the last year but also because thieves seem to be getting smarter. One study shows that the increase in card fraud and identity theft has a direct correlation with loss of jobs in that given area. However, this is no reason to stop inviting your neighbours round for dinner, but maybe it is time to start looking into some strong, safe, online fraud prevention software.
As you would expect in such a worrying situation there are multiple websites, companies, even friends attempting to offer you what they think is the best product ever. However, here we will simply tell you what the software does, you can decide on what type of software and where from. There are three separate pieces of online/computer protection software, these are; antivirus software, anti spyware software and the old fashioned, but reliable, firewall protection software.
Anti spyware is probably the consumer’s choice of the three types of protection, as anti spyware software stops malware from taking your personal information. Before we get into the what, let us start with the how. Spyware usually gets onto your pc by either being downloaded by attaching itself to another file (or rather being attached) or by being downloaded as part of a cookie automatically when you enter certain unscrupulous sites. In order to properly secure yourself you should always look to download a strong, fast and reliable anti spyware software. Basically the software does a search of all your files codes for a code that has been found and defined as spyware, once it find it, it will allow you to choose whether you want to remove it or keep it (not all things defined as spyware is dangerous, some sites and cookies to see where you go within their site and nothing more).
Antivirus software is also a useful form of computer protection; however, in practice it actually does nothing for you in terms of fraud prevention. If you would like further information on antivirus software a quick search on the net will most likely send you to some reliable sources.
The third piece of the fraud prevention puzzle is the firewall: a firewall basically blocks websites/people from accessing your computer and calling data from it. Firewalls usually come as part of virus protection but Windows also comes with its own inbuilt one. Some computers may need it activating via the security section found usually through windows update screen or through control panel, firewall. When activating your firewall you will end up having to say yes or no to everything that attempts to access data, this can be from games to internet explorer when calling pages. Due to the constant asking process you may get a little bit annoyed, however, in the end you will be better off for it as you only need to agree to each new thing once.
Over the past recent years security has become the major concern of the internet users. It is important to keep your home computer secure from the viruses, hackers, spyware and other security threats. These security tips are applied on the Windows based operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional and Windows 2003 Server. The general methods of securing your computer and network is keeping your operating system up-to-date, installing up-to-dated antivirus program, anti spyware program, applying security templates, restricting the access to computer server of unauthorized users and applying security patches Microsoft’s website.
The major threats to computer are viruses, spyware, accidental deletion of the files, information theft and unauthorized access. More and more malicious codes are being are written to develop the viruses, Trojan horses, spyware, malware and adware.
Applying local security policies on each computer in a network is a must and you can access the local security policies in the Administrative tools in the Window’s control panel or by simply running it secpol.msc or gpedit.msc. Remmeber that the key policies that should be enabled are audit login for the failed events, creating password policies and requiring Ctrl+Alt+del for login.
If you have made a shared folder in your computer to be accessed by the other users in network, make sure that you have set the permissions to access this folder to only the required users. If you haven’t secured the shared folder by restricting the permissions then your sensitive information can be leaked and your data can be deleted accidentally from the shared folder.
If your computer is directly connected to the internet through Dial up connection, DSL or cable net you need to protect your computer by connecting the hardware firewall and it is also a good idea to install and configure the software firewall as well. In Windows XP there is built in Firewall installed and you can turn it on and off by going to control panel and select “Network and Internet Connections”. You can also try Sygate personal firewall.
Another security measure is to identify the mysterious processes running at the backend with the operating system. These processes starts when the Windows startup. Identify the description and command line instructions for each process.
Bad or weak passwords are the most important causes of the security compromises. A password should never be a dictionary word. A password has less chance to be cracked if it has been changed regularly. Always use the combinations of the alphanumeric, symbols and spaces between words etc to make strong password.
Last but not the least security measure is to encrypting your important files so that they can’t be accessed and read by the unauthorized users.
Southeast Asia: Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand (Fodor’s Foreign Guides) I love the Rough Guides, Moon Guides, and Lonely Planet. The only problem is, they often assume you’re going for 3 weeks or 6 months. I can seldom get away for more than 8-10 days at a time. Fodor’s doesn’t just dump a lot of destination info on you. They help you prioritize by listing “must-see” sights and presenting multiple alternative itineraries for trips of different lengths, etc.
Last December, Fodor’s SE Asia guide helped me figure out that the Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore odyssey we wanted just wouldn’t fit comfortably into 10 days. So we postponed that trip until someday when we have at least 2 or 3 weeks. Instead, we simply flew into Bangkok and immediately booked a 3-day Phnom Penh/Angkor tour. In all, we did 3 days each in Cambodia and Bangkok and 4 days in Tokyo. It was a fabulous trip.
This time I’m using Fodor’s Japan, together with the Moon and Rough Guides (and of course the Internet), to plan a 10-day solo trip to Hokkaido. From Fodor’s I get the highlights, along with a good idea of what I can expect to fit into 10 days. From the other two I get obscure (but equally important!) details, such as the fact that the little farming town of Furano (not mentioned in Fodor’s) gets a lot of Japanese tourists because it was the setting for the long-running TV drama Kita no Kuni Kara (From the North Country). I’ve only seen a few early episodes of that show, but it’s enough that now I want to see Furano too.
To sum up, I use Fodor’s as my starting point, then read other guides to get extra details. I’ve done 2 Asia trips this way, and I’ll be doing the 3rd one very soon. : The best guide to Southeast Asia, completely updated
